Ice Dams on Roof
The primary problem with ice dams on a roof is not the ice dam but the leaking roof! Gravity is the key to keeping a roof from leaking. Gravity keeps the water rolling off the roof and not puddling.. But the the cycle of freezing and melting water defies gravity. When snow and ice build up then ice dams form on the roof. The melting water becomes a pool and gets under the asphalt shingles.

Of course there are  the costly ice dam prevention and ice dam solutions to keep the ice dams from forming on the roof. you can add insulation in the attic this might keep an ice dam from forming. But if you are looking for a low-cost, easy ice dam solution then home renovations may not be in the budget. Or if you get ice dams on the roof becuase you have a low-slope roof, then using an elastomeric roof coating is the best ice dam solution.

A coating of DynaSeal™ clear elastomeric roof coating will bond and seal asphalt shingles. So, when the ice dam causes water to pool on the roof, the roof does not leak! DynaSeal™ clear elastomeric sealant and caulk can be applied below freezing temperatures and even on a damp roof surface.
